Event Description: Youth Summit to Japan-PRESS RELEASE The El Dorado County Chapter of People to People International, is looking for 15 delegates between the ages of 15-17 to be ambassadors on a trip to Warabi, Japan, from July 20th through August 1st, 2018. This is a unique cultural exchange opportunity for local youth to learn about the Japanese way life by being hosted by a Japanese family. In addition to the El Dorado County People to People Chapter, the exchange is sponsored by the city of Warabi, the Warabi Board of Education, the Warabi Rotary Club and Warabi Lion’s Club. The local People To People nonprofit organization was established in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to promote peace and greater understanding between cultures. His granddaughter, Mary Jean Eisenhower, is the current President and CEO. El Dorado County formed a Sister City with Warabi, Japan in 1975. At least 39 exchanges have involved as many as 53 adults in a group, and as many as 24 in youth summits. Couples, individuals, students studying in nearby universities, and teachers teaching English have participated in the exchanges between Warabi and El Dorado County over the past 43 years. Warabi, covering approximately two square miles, is located near Tokyo. With a population of about 72,500, it is considered not only the smallest city in Japan, but also the most densely populated city in Japan. Applicants must reside in El Dorado County, be of good moral character, personable, articulate, open-minded, respectful, cooperative, enthusiastic, and be willing to immerse themselves in a new culture. They should be ready to gain maximum educational value, be able to fulfill the rigorous demands of international travel and be active participants in the planned itinerary. Once they are home, they may be asked to speak to other organizations about their experience. Prior participants have said it is a great “hands on” way to learn. The youth ambassadors are responsible for airfare, and personal and incidental expenses only. The Japanese hosts will provide meals, lodging and group travel expenditures while in Japan. In preparation for their visit, the young ambassadors will take part is several workshops which includes some basic Japanese language. For more information and applications, please contact Julie Bauer at juliebaueremail@gmail.com or Myrna Hanses at mshanses@yahoo.com or 530-350-7057. The application deadline is March 1. If interested in learning more about People to People or becoming a member, contact Janet Sambucetti, President, at jsambucetti29@gmail.com or 530-333-1823.
