Event Description: On Saturday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma, California will celebrate the many contributions made by people of English and Welsh descent who came to California during and after the Gold Rush. At 11 a.m. join park docent Dick Williams in the theater in the visitor center at Marshall Gold Discovery SHP to learn more about discharged members of the Mormon Battalion who blazed a new trail eastward over the Sierras that later became known as the Mormon Emigrant Trail. A few of the battalion members were Welshmen who had been miners in Wales. Using their mining skills, they helped clear away large boulders from the trail. This route became a valuable time saving passage for thousands of California-bound travelers. Mr. Williams will also regale the audience with stories of his Welsh ancestors who traveled across the trail driving cattle to the Bay Area. Visitors are also encouraged to join park docents under the trees behind the museum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for living history demonstrations. We will also have displays depicting the traditional clothing worn by Welsh women and authentic Welsh recipes.
