Event Description:
Docents at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma, California will be demonstrating what life was like during the California Gold Rush during Living History Day activities. Visitors can take part in hands on demonstrations such as journal writing, embroidery, laundry, tin punching, children’s games, and more. At 2 p.m. join park docents Jim Watkins and Jeanie Brown in the theater in the visitor center as they share the stories of two of the men who brought the good word to Coloma during the mid to late nineteenth century. Reverend Caleb Pierce, as portrayed by Jim Watkins, was a regular preacher at the Emmanuel Church in Coloma as well as the Episcopal Church in Placerville and Diamond Springs. He spent his weekdays walking all over El Dorado County bringing the word of God to people in outlying areas. His story is one of passion and dedication to his calling. The Catholic Church played an important role in the society of Coloma. Built in 1856, St. John’s Church still sits atop piety hill looking out over the Coloma Valley. Docent Jeanie Brown will be sharing stories of the church and of Father John Ingoldsby who held mass in Coloma in 1851. Visitors are encouraged to join park docents by the millworker’s cabin from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for living history demonstrations. This event continues the park’s exploration of the Characters of Coloma – people who made their mark in Coloma’s history and beyond. On the second Saturday of each month during the park’s monthly Living History event, different characters will be highlighted. October 10-13, the many characters of the gold rush will come together during Coloma Gold Rush Live, the park’s annual 4-day living history event. Upcoming Living History dates and themes for the year include: April 13 Morman Influence May 11 Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Colony Members June 6-9 No Living History. Visit Wakamatsu Farm for their Sesquicentennial Celebration July 13 Schoolmasters August 10 Public Servants September 14 Agriculture in the Coloma Valley October 10-13 Coloma Gold Rush Live!
