Event Description: Marshall Gold Discovery Lecture Series Continues on July 13 with Tales of Edwin Markum and Coloma’s One-Room Schoolhouse On Saturday, July 13, at 2 p.m. in the museum at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, Park Interpretive Specialist Susan Okey will share stories of Coloma’s one room schoolhouse and Literary Laureate Edwin Markum, who taught school in Coloma and later served as superintendent of schools in Placerville. Markum went on to achieve literary fame for his poem “The Man with the Hoe.” Edwin Markam Middle School in Placerville is named after him. Join docents under the trees behind the park’s museum from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as they demonstrate what life was like during the California Gold Rush during Living History Day activities. Visitors can take part in hands on demonstrations such as journal writing, rope making, laundry, tin punching, children’s games, and more.

Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, Hwy. 49, Coloma, CA. 8 miles north of Placerville on Highway 49.
